NAM and G77 in spotlight

Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, is abuzz with preparations as the country readies itself to host the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the Third South Summit at Speke Resort Munyonyo from January 15th to 23rd, 2024.

Uganda will spend a significant UGX 66 billion on G77 and NAM summits.

The comprehensive plans were unveiled during a grand media launch held at Serena Hotel on November 14th, 2023. The summit, themed “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” will also witness the High-Level International Summit of the Group of 77 Plus (China G77+China).

Leadership commitment

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs, John Mulimba, rallied the media to play a crucial role in sensitizing the public about these global events.

The Head of Public Service and chairperson of the National Organizing Committee, Lucy Nakyobe, emphasized the collaborative nature of preparations, asserting that success requires unity between the media and organizers.

Themes and objectives

Nakyobe highlighted the summit themes: ‘Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence’ for NAM and ‘Leaving No One Behind’ for the South Summit. These events aim to bring global leaders together to address pressing global issues and enhance cooperation among member nations.

Infrastructure and security: Crucial infrastructure enhancements are underway, including road repairs, Convention Center construction, and airport upgrades. Nakyobe assured the country’s security to receive international visitors, emphasizing ongoing efforts to maintain vigilance. The airport is also undergoing significant readjustments, and hotels have been inspected to ensure comfortable accommodation for delegates.

City preparations

Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director of KCCA, outlined Kampala’s preparations, including a 15km road maintenance project targeting flood-prone areas, installation of streetlights along 30km of roads, and removal of illegal structures.

Efforts to rescue street children and create safe working places for vendors are also underway.

Internet infrastructure

Amina Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, highlighted the upgraded internet infrastructure, promising efficient and uninterrupted connectivity during the global events.

Economic opportunities

Ambassador Adonia Ayebare emphasized the economic benefits for Uganda in hosting these summits, citing the potential for Foreign Development Investment from developed countries participating in the events.

As Uganda gears up for the 19th NAM Summit and Third South Summit, the country showcases its readiness on various fronts, from infrastructure to security and city preparedness.

The collaboration between government entities, led by KCCA, reflects a commitment to ensuring the success of these significant global gatherings, with potential economic opportunities for Uganda on the horizon.
