The government has joined forces with Summa Construction Company, a Turkish construction firm, to construct a modern, multipurpose indoor sports complex in Lugogo, Kampala.

This was officially announced by President Yoweri Museveni during a meeting with key sports officials on September 19, 2023.

“I welcome the proposal by Summa, a Turkish construction company, to construct a modern state-of-the-art multipurpose indoor sports complex at Lugogo in Kampala. The government will support them because we need it to continue developing sports in Uganda.”– President Museveni

The Vision: The proposed sports complex, slated for construction at the premises of the National Council of Sports (NCS) in Lugogo, will be a state-of-the-art facility with a seating capacity of 15,000.

Key Amenities: The multipurpose sports complex will house a range of amenities, including:

• A multipurpose indoor arena with seating for 15,000 spectators
• A smaller indoor sports arena with a capacity of 3,000
• A 25-meter swimming pool featuring eight lanes
• A multi-purpose standard pitch
• An athlete hostel accommodating 60 individuals
• An accommodation facility with 120 rooms
• A showroom
• A shopping center
• A state-of-the-art fitness gym

The Urgent Need for Modernization: The technical team involved in the project emphasized that the existing sports facilities at Lugogo do not meet international competition standards. This inadequacy has limited Uganda’s ability to host prestigious sporting events that can significantly contribute to the economy by generating revenue, creating jobs, and attracting investments.

Sports State Minister Peter Ogwang stated that the current Lugogo complex, constructed in 1957 and never substantially renovated, is in a state of disrepair. The inclusion of outdated materials like asbestos roofs and structural deficiencies in some buildings further underscores the need for this ambitious project.

Economic Impact: Minister Ogwang also highlighted the project’s economic potential, estimating that it could increase non-tax revenue from $270,000 to approximately $22 million per annum. This revenue boost will result from hosting international events and the enhanced infrastructure’s ability to attract various activities and investments.

Summa Construction Company’s Commitment: Murat Altun, the project manager of Summa Construction Company, expressed the firm’s readiness to undertake the project efficiently and meet all deadlines. Summa’s track record of successfully executing projects in various countries, including Uganda’s neighbor, Rwanda, adds to their credibility and the project’s promise.
