In a shocking revelation, the Minister of State for Trade, Harriet Ntabaazi, disclosed that 30 Members of Parliament (MPs) are currently under criminal investigation for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement of Shs164 billion earmarked for Cooperatives compensation. The scandal, which has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, includes the implication of five vocal Opposition MPs.
During an appearance before Parliament’s Trade Committee, Minister Ntabaazi confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) is actively pursuing the case. She emphasized that the investigation extends beyond the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, involving more than 30 MPs, including five from the Opposition known for their outspoken nature.
“We are before the security investigatory organs of the Government; let us battle out there, and the law will have it all,” asserted Minister Ntabaazi. She called for calm among MPs, reassuring them that the Ministry will continue executing its mandate during the ongoing embezzlement probe. Ntabaazi drew parallels with a past scandal involving the Office of the Prime Minister, where the theft of iron sheets did not impede the government’s operations.
The Minister’s statements underscored a commitment to transparency and accountability, urging members of the Trade Committee not to be deterred by the unfolding investigation. “That shouldn’t worry the Committee, and that won’t stop the Government from working,” she affirmed.
The revelation of embezzlement within the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives raises questions about the effectiveness of existing oversight mechanisms and calls for a renewed focus on combating corruption within government institutions.
